How to Prevent or Delay Diabetes Health Problems

November is National Diabetes Month, a great time to check how your diabetes management plan is working. Health problems related to diabetes can develop over a long time without any symptoms, so it’s important to stay on top of day-to-day diabetes care:
  • Follow a healthy eating plan, including eating more fruits and vegetables and less sugar and salt.
  • Be physically active10 to 20 minutes a day is better than 1 hour once a week.
  • Take diabetes medicine if prescribed by your health care provider.
  • Check your blood sugar to understand and track the effects of food, activity, and medicine.

Remember you’re not in this alone—your health care team can help you manage. And better management helps make diabetes a part of life instead of life being all about diabetes. Find out how you can prevent or delay diabetes complications in our feature article.
