Updates to the Microsporidiosis Section of the Adult and Adolescent Opportunistic Infections Guidelines
The Microsporidiosis section of the Guidelines for the Prevention and Treatment of Opportunistic Infections in Adults and Adolescents with HIV has been updated. The Panel provided an update on the various microsporidia that have been documented in human infections and the correct taxonomy for these organisms, including the relationship of the microsporidia to the cryptomycota. The therapeutics section has been updated to include information on the availability of fumagillin for the treatment of Enterocytozoon bieneusi infection, including contact information for obtaining this medication from Sanofi. In addition, data on the use of nitazoxanide for the treatment of microsporidiosis is discussed. The reference section has been updated to include the authoritative textbook Microsporidia: Pathogens of Opportunity. AIDSinfo Updates Investigational HIV Drug Fact Sheets
AIDSinfo recently updated several investigational HIV drug fact sheets. These drugs, microbicides, and vaccines are currently being studied in clinical trials and are not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for sale in the United States to treat or prevent HIV. The investigational drug fact sheets are available in two formats: a plain language version, which includes an overview of the drug and information on clinical trials studying the drug; and a health professional version, which includes detailed, scientific information about the drug, including information on the pharmacology of the drug and on adverse events of the drug identified in clinical trials.
