Uses and Misuses of Pilot Studies
Pilot studies are a critical step in the process of development and testing of new interventions. However, misconceptions exist about the right ways to use them.
The goal of pilot work is not to test hypotheses about the effects of an intervention, but rather to assess the feasibility/acceptability of an approach for use in a larger scale study. Thus, in a pilot study, you’re not answering the question “Does this intervention work?” Instead, you’re gathering information to help answer the question “Can I do this?”
